Society of Physics Students Talk: David Evans, Yale Geology & Geophysics, “Magnetism of ancient rocks: Constraints on Earth’s physical evolution over billions of years”

February 16, 2015

Event time: Thursday, February 19, 2015 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm

Location: Sloane Physics Lab, 3rd Floor Lounge See map
217 Prospect St.

New Haven, CT 06511

Event description:

In this talk I will present research i n my paleomagnetic laboratory, bearing on three major questions of Earth’s evolution: (1) How has the Earth’s magnetic field changed through time? (2) Has plate tectonics always operated with similar styles and rates in the past? (3) Have there been episodes of rapid true polar wander? All three of these geophysical issues have important consequences for long–‐term changes in Earth’s surface environment, including habitability for life.
